The design review for that compliance screen went well. Clean layout, generous spacing, document preview in a modal, applicant details in tidy collapsible sections. We were proud of it.

Then we sat down next to the people who actually use it. A moderator opens case after case for a whole shift, the same decision over and over again. Our beautiful screen made each one cost a click to open the document, a scroll to compare the name on the ID with the name in the form, then another click to close the modal again. Multiply that by a shift and the queue stops moving. Within days the team had a second window open for the parts that were simply faster elsewhere.

What it cost us: rebuilding the screen we liked most, and learning that nobody had ever told us how many times a day it would be opened.

So now we ask that question before we call any internal screen finished. How many times will one person do this today? Then we design for that number, with everything needed for one decision visible at once, a keyboard path for the common case, nothing sitting between a reviewer and the thing they are verifying. And we run a batch of real cases ourselves, with a timer, before we hand it over.

Beauty is aimed at the visitor who comes once. The person who lives in a screen all day is paying for something different.

You probably have a screen in your business that someone opens a hundred times a day.
