We stopped scoring candidates on how they would build a thing, and started scoring how they would hand it over. Build skill shows up within a week. The cost of someone who cannot explain state (why this retry is safe, what this flag protects) arrives months later, and whoever is on call pays it. Handover is what we are actually buying.
So we weigh the faster builder against the one whose work survives them being out.
