A trial task came back with a third of the code we expected. The candidate had found an internal service that already did most of it and wired into that instead. Our old scorecard read that as incomplete, and we nearly passed on them. On inherited systems the expensive habit is rebuilding what already runs, and we've paid for that in payment code before. Now we ask what someone looked for before they wrote anything.
